For our performance, one of websites that I maintained, already migrated using new systems.
I used nginx for my frontend webserver. Then still using Apache for my backend server. For static files I use nginx.
The reason I used nginx is because nginx is lightweight webservers and proxy. You can use nginx as proxy for POP3 and SMTP also.
